Each sales representatives can then become recruiters, train newcomers and earn extra commissions from the newcomers’ sales. (So if a sales representative is Mark, Mark’s trainer is his up line, and people Mark train are in his down line.)

So if a sales rep represent one level of the marketing system, if he is linked to an other sales rep who trained him to sell his product, and if he has himself trained other sales rep to sell the same product, then there is a Multi-Level-Marketing system in place. There is no limit to the number of levels an MLM can have. The number of levels one sales rep can get commissions from is different in every company. For some it is one level, for some more.

Whether it be an MLM or a traditional company, the goal behind it is the same : to provide a service or product of value, which hopefully will make the consumer’s life better. No matter how brilliant the product is however, it will only get sold if it is known by the targeted audience. This is where distributors or sell reps come in. Their role is to find targeted customers and to get the product in their hands.

MLM systems are absolutely legal as long as they involve a real product, as long as they actually have some sort of value to sell. If they are only about recruiting new sales reps, then it becomes what is called a pyramidal scheme and is illegal.
