As a mainstay at most Asian restaurants, almost everyone has been given a fortune cookie at one time or another. Although many people do enjoy the taste of this crispy cookie, their flavor is not what they are best known for. What everybody loves about fortune cookies is the message contained within them. So what would happen if you could put your own words on that little slip of paper? How many people would be paying attention to what you had to say if it was written on a fortune on the inside of a cookie? Your message would probably be the talk of the town.
There are many companies in American that will allow you to do just that. They make small groups of fortune cookies for each individual customer. Because of this they can create a cookie that looks the way you want it to and more importantly, says what you want it to.
There are so many things that can be done to change the appearance of the fortune cookie. You can get them dyed in a variety of colors. You can get them dipped in chocolate or coated with a colorful candy shell. You can even have them sent as a bouquet. This would attract much more attention than a common vase of flowers.
It is the ability to write your own message inside the cookie that truly makes custom fortune cookies unique. Think about how many people would pay attention to and remember the name of your business if the found it on the inside of a cookie. In addition, anyone who discovered your company in this manner is likely to tell their friends about it. Custom fortune cookies can definitely be an effective advertising tool.
You could also have cookies sent to people you know as a way to say thank you or make an announcement. They might also be useful to apologize to a loved one. What person could stay angry after being given a number of perfectly formed little cookies, each one of which contains a note that says “I’m sorry”.
Whatever your reason, custom fortune cookies are a novel and fun way to get your point across. Because each batch is made individually, they do cost more than regular fortune cookies. However, the response you receive to any message you print on the fortune will be well worth the cost. No one will ever forget the information they find on the inside of those cookies, nor will they forget the person who gave it to them.

We all know that once flowers are severed at the stem, they will eventually decay. We can lengthen the time that flowers look their best by following several guidelines. In doing so we can take more enjoyment out of an investment, which is often hefty when buying from a florist.
First you should guarantee that the florist you got them from can give you an idea on how fresh the flowers are. Only get the freshest flowers that have either been fresh cut, or kept in cold storage so as to prevent the process of decay. Some florists will even guarantee that flowers are of a certain age to prove to clients that they care about customer satisfaction.
Even if you have just obtained the flowers, you will need to cut the stems immediately. This will allow water to get to the flower via the stem. Make sure you make the cut at an angle, typically a fairly wide one, so that you are able to create as much surface area as possible on the flower stem. The end result should look like the stem comes to a sharp point.
You should keep your vase clean at all times. Also pick out any leaves or foliage that dips below the water line. Bacteria can form and cause drastic damage to your flower. An infection can cut the shelf life of the flower by whole days if you aren’t careful. Some additives may help you in safeguarding your flower from bacteria and other negative influences.
The right vase should be tall enough to cover around three inches of the stem in water. This is considered normal for the plant to have proper access to water. Any less or more may negatively influence the life of your flower. Also make sure that any crevices present in the vase are well rinsed out, since soap may hide in such places after cleaning the vase. Some florists will give you a vase with the flowers as a gift that you can use.
Keep your flowers away from anything that would harm them. Some florists may dye flowers to make them festive for events such as Valentine’s Day. Although this is creative and nice, it will also lower the life expectancy of the flower more often than not. Some bouquets may also mutilate flowers to appear a certain way- which will also drastically decrease the amount of time you can expect your flower to live.
Final Thoughts
Florists should have some good information on how to handle your flowers if you aren’t sure on how to go about caring for them. Also check out gardening books and resources online for more tips and tricks in flower care- and be sure to pass the tips onto others if you find them helpful.

Mothers have been honored and revered since time began, but the celebration of Mothers Day in the United States is a relatively new practice. Rooted in the ancient Roman tradition of Matronalia, a festival where mothers were presented with gifts, Mothers Day as we know it now is most closely tied to the British holiday Mothering Sunday, which has pagan roots.
Mother’s Day, which has roots in an ancient United Kingdom ritual known as ‘Mothering Sunday’, is generally assumed to be a 20th century custom started in the United States.
Mother’s Day began in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe. It was started as a call for women to unite against the Civil War. Howe’s efforts did not succeed. However, her efforts inspired a young Appalachian mother named Ann Jarvis. She attempted to improve medical care from both sides for soldiers. She called in ‘Mother’s Work Days’. Her work later help to reconcile Union and Confederate soldiers.
May, 1914 was when President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day an official holiday. This declaration was brought on by Anna Jarvis. Jarvis was looking to create a holiday celebrating women. Her first Mother’s Day was done on May 10, 1907 when she passed out white carnations to members of her church.
It is tradition now, particularly in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. for a mother to receive carnations as a gift on Mothers Day. This is naturally due in part to Anna Jarvis passing out white carnations to her church. She chose carnations because they happened to be her mothers favorite flower. White carnations were chosen to symbolize the purity of a mothers love, but have lately come to represent a mother who is no longer living. A living mother will most often be recognized by a red carnation.
Disgusted with the commercialization of the holiday, Anna Jarvis became a crusader against the holiday. She was very outspoken and was arrested once for disturbing the peace at a card industry. She criticized them for being to lazy to write a letter. Anna finally said, “I wished I had never started the day because it became so out of control…”
Nevertheless, Mothers Day continues to be one of the most commercially successful holidays in the United States. Each year, Americans spend approximately $2.6 billion on Mothers Day flower arrangements, $1.53 billion on pampering gifts”like spa treatments”and another $68 million on greeting cards. According the National Restaurant Association, Mothers Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States.

When it comes to decorating hotels or a doctor’s office, there really is not a whole lot that can be done. You really do not want to spend an overload of money on items that could be stolen or broken. You also really do not want to add too much of anything as that will require extra dusting and care which is not something that is a job anyone enjoys doing. The perfect solution is to add artificial flowers throughout the rooms you are decorating. But why purchase artificial flowers instead of the real thing?
Artificial flowers instead of fresh flowers are not only less expensive, but are better for other practical reasons as well. One artificial flower display in a vase might cost you around 20 depending on how big it is. A real fresh flower arrangement of a simlilar size will probably cost you twice as much and then die leaving you to replace them time and time again. You could be spending thousands of pounds a year just on flowers if you change them often.
Another great thing about artificial flowers is that they will always stay in bloom and you will also not have to worry about providing them with the correct lighting. This is a good thing for those offices with very little window space. You can truly get all of the beautiful flower displays that you want, without having to squeeze them all next to the one small window you have. Placing artificial flowers in the darkest corner of the room will not bother them or kill them.
Another reason why artificial flowers are great for businesses is that you do not have to worry about upsetting anyone with allergies. Whether the allergies are simple or complex, it is much better to completely avoid this problem all together. This is especially a good idea for doctor’s offices where people may already be coming in seeking help with the allergies that they are suffering from. No one is allergic to artificial flowers, which makes them a great alternative.
One of the other benefits of artificial flowers over real flowers is simply that you can have any flower you want at any time of year! If you want a beautiful lily display in the middle of Winter then that is not a problem for fake flowers. Also they are ideal for weddings too for that same reason – have the flowers of your choice in any season. So after reading this article hopefully you will now see the benefits of artificial silk flowers and why they are so ideal for businesses from doctors surgeries, hotels, restaurants and other places of work.

Almost everyone is familiar with fortune cookies. Light and flavorful, these cookies are handed out at the end of almost every meal eaten in an Asian restaurant. Of course, as good as the cookies may be, what people are really interested in are the little pieces of paper inside. From the ridiculous to the sublime, these fortunes are the best part of the cookie. So what if you could print your own message on those little pieces of paper? What if you could create a custom fortune cookie to sell your idea or make your announcement?
It turns out that you can. A quick search on the internet turns up a lengthy list of companies that specialize in creating custom fortune cookies. Instead of being mass produced, these cookies are made for individual customers who can customize the cookies themselves as well as the messages contained within them.
There are so many things that can be done to change the appearance of the fortune cookie. You can get them dyed in a variety of colors. You can get them dipped in chocolate or coated with a colorful candy shell. You can even have them sent as a bouquet. This would attract much more attention than a common vase of flowers.
The real fun of custom fortune cookies is what you put inside them. You can have almost anything printed on those little pieces of paper. Want to advertise you business? Then have you company’s name and contact information put inside a fortune cookie. The novelty of it is sure to attract attention.
You could also have cookies sent to people you know as a way to say thank you or make an announcement. They might also be useful to apologize to a loved one. What person could stay angry after being given a number of perfectly formed little cookies, each one of which contains a note that says “I’m sorry”.
Face it, the world is full of people. Everyone needs something to help rise above the crowd. Custom fortune cookies may just give you the edge you need. They are a fun and unique way to communicate with those around you and should prove to be well worth the cost.

Fake trees are becoming increasingly common in today’s modern world, and they are being used in homes, offices and even in the reception area designs at world famous companies. Today these trees have an imprtessive realism that is combined by often using actual bark, branches, and sometimes twigs as the base and integrating these with the finest leaves, and berries that can be made.
Instead of watering, trimming, and providing adequate sunlight, you can bring the look of tropical splendor to any indoor space with only a bit of cleaning needed on occasion, to keep the look. These trees are so realistic that they are the next best thing to nature itself and will attract living birds and butterflies to visit amidst their leafy canopies and branches. Much of the popularity of these trees is undoubtedly due to the ease of care and the low maintenance that they require.
Artificial trees will not create problems for those with allergies because there is no pollen to be released into the air and the leaves will never drop. People can be assured that the overall beauty will remain, regardless of the seasons of the year or where they are placed in the home or office.
When you fancy a change of scenery, move the trees about, or add new ones to replace them. You will be able to find lots of these artificial trees at prices in every budget and price range. These trees are made to be exquisite replicas of their real life counterparts, and this means that the lifelike trunks, branches, and leaves are so realistic that many people will have to touch the tree in order to distinguish it from the real thing.
No matter what types of trees you may prefer in nature, you are certain to find a tree that is an identical match at a site or store that specializes in artificial trees and plants. You can choose stately bamboo, ficus, elegant weeping figs, or even find delicate olive trees with life-like, small fruits adorning the branches.
You can add a sunny touch of the Mediterranean or the Asia by adding one of these unique and beautiful additions to any room of your home or even the office. Too little sunlight or temperatures that are too hot won’t affect the beauty of the trees in the slightest. Now these artificial trees can be incorporated into the decor of rooms where real plants have difficulty thriving.

Orchids which have been growing in baskets for some length of time will have attached their roots firmly to the wooden slats, and it is difficult to remove the plant without some damage. These epiphytes quickly make up for any root loss by producing new ones immediately after potting, providing that it is done at some time during the spring months. The roots therefore can be cut away using a sharp pruning knife and slicing around the inside of the basket. This enables the plant to be gently prised free from the base, and no damage is done to any part of the plant above the surface.
By the time the Encyclia pentotis has been removed from its existing square wooden basket, it will have little of its original root system left, and with the removal of the old compost there will be nothing to hold the plant in the new basket. Using a length of plastic-coated wire and a pair of pliers position the plant in its new elongated basket with the oldest, leafless pseudobulbs to one end, so that the front of the plant is close to the other end, with sufficient room available for at least two years’ growth.
The plant can now be wired firmly into position by taking a length of wire around one bottom slat and the rhizome, in between two pseudobulbs towards the back of the plant, and twisting it tight. The rhizome is hard and the wire will not cut into it. It may be necessary to put two or three wire tics to secure the plant.
The back half of the plant is now fixed by its rhizome which is resting on the bottom of the basket. The basket is now filled with compost, a little at a time starting by filling around the back half of the plant which will just cover the rhizome.
Apple wood is also very acceptable, and although it has a smoother bark some excellent shaped branches can be found. Less suitable arc the shiny, straight branches of cherry, or any resinous pine trees. The branch should be from a live tree and the side branches cut off or trimmed hack until the desired shape is formed.
An identical-shaped plant, this time Epidendrum ciliare, six monihs after having been potted into a long shallow wooden basket. The speedy recovery of the root system can clearly be seen; the new white roots have penetrated the compost, some attaching themselves to the basket and others growing downward underneath the basket, their growing tips searching out the moisture in the air. The plant has two new growths which are developing rapidly on the right.

When the plant has been stripped bare to the roots it can be divided. A leading piece consisting of a double new growth and four-leaved pseudobulbs is removed by severing the rhizome with secateurs. One further leading division of a similar size can be removed from the other sick of the plant, leaving a hack division with leafed pseudobulbs which can also be potted. Any good leafless pseudo- bulbs should be divided and potted singly. Alternatively the rhizome can be severed in the pot six months before repotting when the back division will have started a new growth.
The filling in and pressing down of the compost continues until it is level with the base of the plant and the pot rim. It is important to ensure even pressure all round the plant, bearing in mind that there is much more room at the front than to the rear, where it will be a little more difficult to work compost into the small space available.
The divisions are potted according to the usual method as described on page 56, ensuring that the new growth has sufficient room and is sitting on the surface of the compost. Cattleyas should not be overpotted, as can happen due to their long narrow habit of growing. They can be repotted annually, often just ‘dropped on’ with no disturbance to the root ball. They often need extra support for their cop heavy pseudobulbs until new roots have again anchored the plant in its pot. Don’t forget extra labels for all the divisions: the date of repotting can also help for future reference.
By comparison with other orchids, the root systems of paphiopedilums are not so extensive, although fewer roots will cling very tightly to the inside of the pot. Their unusually hairy roots are brown-coloured, unlike the usual white of other orchids. This can make it more difficult to determine which arc alive and which are dead. Again, it will be the roots supporting the older growths which will have died, whereas the roots on the younger growths will be alive and healthy.
The root trimming on paphiopedilums is all-important, and should be tackled with great care. The dead roots should be felt for, and only removed if they feel flat and empty, with the outer covering peeling away. It will be found that the remaining live roots are less brittle and, therefore, with careful repotting, these can often be left whole, or trimmed only where broken. They should not be trimmed to the same extent as, say, cymbidiums.
Paphiopedilums should be placed into as small a pot as possible, with just sufficient room to hold their roots comfortably. An excess of compost around the roots will quickly lead to overwatering as the roots are confined within a soggy mass containing far more moisture than they can possibly take up. Extra crocking in the base of the pot is an advantage to these plants, in order to ensure the swift drainage so necessary to their welfare. Here, different size pots have been selected for the divisions and ample crocking is being placed in the pots.

The plant selected is a beautifully shaped Coelogyne Burfordense, with three large green pseudobulbs, each topped by a pair of large, broad leaves. This famous old hybrid is an ideal choice with a semi-pendent flower spike of large green, black-lipped flowers.
The whole is then pressed down using the fingers to ensure an even firmness all around the pot and the plant should be secure in the pot. If the plant is at all loose, it should be taken out and started again. A loose plant will find it very difficult to root itself.
Orchids growing in a suspended position rely more heavily on a moist atmosphere and basket culture is best confined to a greenhouse.
For the next few weeks, very careful watering will be required so as to allow any damaged roots to heal. As soon as new root activity is observed around the base of the new growths, normal watering can he resumed.
Baskets are not always rigid and may have a rounded base, in which case before attempting to pot the plant the basket should be stood inside a slightly larger flower pot to hold it firm and steady. Most types of basket have large gaps between the lattice and must be lined. An ideal type of liner is pea netting which will allow the water to flood through, and young roots to penetrate it easily, while holding the compost in place.
A large square is cut which will be sufficient to line the basket with some overlap at the rim, and placed inside the basket. It is taped into position with lengths of sticky tape which can be removed when potting is completed. If this plant were to be repotted using the general guidelines of leaving 2 in (5 cm) of rooni in front of the leading growth, it would be grossly overpotted with far too much compost and moisture around the roots which would lead directly to overwatering.
