<p>Different organizations roll out leadership training programs to their employees and a lot of outlines of leadership training and development programs are available for use. However, a question remains: what should leadership training and development programs really include? </p>
<p>As with any activity, it would be helpful to start a leadership training and development program with icebreakers and warm up activities. Icebreakers like The Magic Wand, Marooned, The Interview, Who Did That?, The ADDIE Game (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation), and Finish the Sentence usually help clear the way for learning to come about through making learners feel more comfortable by making them engage in conversations. There are also motivators or activities intended to help stimulate learners to engage in the training proper. </p>
<p>The bulk of the leadership training and development program should focus on the different concepts that surround leadership. These include concepts on leadership such as the different approaches that leaders take to address different situations, the kind of leadership that they assume, culture and climate, people and mission, relationship with others, self assessment, leadership matrix, and others. Human behavior should also be part of the discussion as this is essential in determining how to motivate different types of persons.</p>
<p>Then, you can start focusing on different leadership and management tasks such as leading, directing, communicating, and motivating. Making and implementing visions and engaging in coaching activities are integral parts of leading. When discussing direction, you must take into consideration the importance of asking the right questions. The Johari Window is effective in showing people that communication occurs in two levels: overt and covert. It also discusses how people view the two levels of the communication process (arena, faade, blind spot, and unknown). </p>
<p>A sensitive part in any leadership training and development program is motivating. Discussing motivation often incites more conflict instead of developing understanding. When discussing motivation, it is crucial to understand what people want from their jobs, the importance of positive reinforcement, the effect of mistakes and blame, how to identify performance problems, effective confrontation counseling, and how to go about performance appraisals. </p>
<p>In any leadership training and development program, it is vital to remember that beliefs and values, leadership styles, teamwork, diversity, time management, change, and organizational behavior as elements that should not be left out. Although there is no perfect leadership training and development program, it is always possible for an organization to come up with one that would be most effective in enhancing the skills of their leaders and improving the kind of leadership that they support.</p>

<p>When you are going to be in a leadership position, you may feel that you are not at all ready and that you are not at all prepared.  What you need to remember, however, is that good leaders are made, not born, and that leadership is a quality that can be learned.  It is actually quite easy to know what it takes to make a good leader, but sticking with these ideals can be more difficult.</p>
<p>First, remember that a good leader is someone who is honest.  There is never a reason for you to lie to the people who have placed their trust in you.  While it is completely acceptable to refuse to tell them sensitive information, remember that lying is not acceptable in the least.  Being caught in a lie is disastrous for someone who would be a leader.</p>
<p>Are you a good communicator?  More than any other member of a team, a leader has to be able to convey their commands clearly and with force.  If you are going to get people to follow you, they are going to need to know what you are talking about!  Can you make sure that your subordinates know what is going on and can they go to you for easy confirmation?</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll need to know what you are talking about as well if you&#8217;re the leader. When you are a leader, knowing where you&#8217;re going is very important. There are quite a few people who are great in their field and they end up leading the field. This can turn into a problem if they don&#8217;t know how to lead other people the right way. However, at least they know what it takes to complete the job at hand. </p>
<p>Are you flexible?  It might not seem as though this is a quality for a good leader, but the truth is that unless you can maintain peace in your team, you are going to have many problems.  Conflicts are going to arise and they are not all going to be external.  Take some time to consider how good you are at the art of compromise and what you can do to make sure that your team is going to be able to function well as a unit.</p>
<p>Willing to take the responsibility for actions? This characteristic can be one of the most difficult parts of being a good leader and many leaders have yet to perfect it. However, to be a leader that is effective, you will have to stand up at times and take responsibility. This can include taking the responsibility for things that go right, and for the things that go wrong along the way as well. </p>
<p>Make sure that as a leader, you do not play favorites.  Everyone on your team should be accorded an equal amount of responsibility, respect and attention, so make sure that you interact responsibly with your team.</p>
<p>It can be difficult and a lot of work to be a great leader. It&#8217;s definitely not an easy job. In the end though, it can definitely be worth all the hard work so consider these concepts and how they can work for you.</p>

<p>In our intensely competitive global economy, be it pharmaceuticals, electronics, software or OTC products, the name of the game is innovation. The key to staying on top is getting to the next big idea and turning it into a marketable product or service&#8221;and doing it faster than the competition or the private label distributors. How can we lead with innovation as our goal? Everybody knows that the best ideas rarely come from the top; we also know that people usually do not come up with innovations while sitting at the computer checking e-mails, listening to voicemails or sitting in on the production forecast meeting.</p>
<p>The creativity that spawns innovation transcends the daily grind of the workplace and often shows up in unexpected areas. Great ideas come in dreams, from reading magazines you normally wouldn&#8217;t pick up, seeing a movie, meeting new people, eating at a new restaurant, traveling to a foreign land and scores of other daily human activities that are unattached to the structural demands of traditional office life in corporate America.</p>
<p>The question I put to leaders is this: how can we reengineer office life to serve innovation? For many years, the function of office life was to serve production. Production is orderly, has concrete goals, benchmarks to meet, quotas to produce, etc. But as fast as markets move and shift, building an office environment around production only is no longer appropriate. Such an environment produces the illusion of stability in the marketplace.</p>
<p>Innovations happen when we don&#8217;t have a specific goal in mind. A powerful innovation leaps over goals and staid thinking to create a new and bold strategy. Today, more than ever, we need creative offices where innovation is encouraged, not orderly offices where status quo thought and performance are repeated day after day.</p>
<p>It is our leaders who are charged with making this happen. Leaders must somehow find a way to tap into their people&#8217;s imaginations and set them free to roam in uncharted territory. Leaders need to be prepared to put a process in motion and then get out of the way so that the boundless creativity of their people takes over. Much different than the old time autocrats, today&#8217;s leader must be a creative facilitator &#8211; someone who understands how to provide people with a less stressful environment that allows for the playful experimentation that leads to innovation.</p>
<p>I advise my clients to bring together a diverse group of people and meet off-site one morning a month, using a different creative facilitator every time (not the boss!). No phones, no computers and no interruptions. A well-facilitated three hours are all the group needs to go off and dream about the &#8220;Big Idea.&#8221;</p>
<p>During these creative three hours, group members can focus their full attention on what&#8217;s out there and get clarity on what they&#8217;ve been thinking about for the last month, what they&#8217;ve been reading, seeing, experiencing and hearing about from customers, the sales people, the media, other cultures, popular culture, compatible or incompatible industries, etc. The group then needs to consider the ideas they believe they can all get behind to meet and/or exceed the challenges at hand.</p>
<p>Next, the group drills down to the four or five concepts that best fit the company culture and have the substance to promote what Andy Grove calls a 10x change. It is then &#8211; when they think one particular idea makes sense and is executable &#8211; that they are charged with making it happen. They present it to the powers that be, or to whomever they report. And the key for the leader here is to get out of the way of the &#8220;Big Idea&#8221; and let it find its footing in the real world.</p>
<p>Remarkable things happen when upper management communicates that it supports and values these brainstorming sessions &#8211; that they are not just some nice activity, but are actually at the heart of a new business model based on innovation. Then people approach these monthly meetings having really done their homework. They are fired up because they know they can potentially come out with a &#8220;Big Idea&#8221; that will impact the real world of their business. They become aware of how much trust the leadership has in their creative abilities. And in today&#8217;s knowledge-based creative economy, where workers are after the next big intellectual challenge, such a leadership practice has the incredible side effect of bolstering employee retention.</p>
<p>For the leader who nourishes this kind of forward-looking &#8220;Big Idea&#8221; thinking within the ranks, it would be foolish not to let some of the best ideas run their course. Allow people to fail. Not every great idea can be a commercial marketable innovation, but some will be &#8211; and they make the ultimate difference.</p>
<p>Sometimes we get stuck in our thinking about leadership. I suggest that today&#8217;s leaders should be charged with allowing some chaos &#8211; at least enough to produce that elusive eureka! moment that can transform their company from average to extraordinary.</p>

<p>Want to lead your company to the top of its field? First, you must foster a culture of innovation&#8230;and that begins at the top.</p>
<p>Naturally, you want your company to be a leader in the marketplace. How can you achieve this goal? Create and nurture a company culture based on innovation.</p>
<p>First, instill a mindset of continuous innovation at every level of your company. We have to debunk the myth that creativity is a trait a few select people are &#8220;born with&#8221;&#8230;that there are those with &#8220;creative personalities&#8221; and then there are the rest of us. In fact, we all have the potential to be innovative, at least to some degree.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear that creativity is unlearned as we grow up. The business world has traditionally favored analytical thinking over the capacity to innovate. Business schools produce highly trained young men and women who think along strict parameters. But times have changed, and now the mission has to change &#8211; to help people unlearn their uncreative habits.</p>
<p>But where to begin?</p>
<p>I&#8217;d like to offer the following seven tips for fostering innovation, gleaned from my personal experience over the years:</p>
<p>1. Encourage a culture of tension. An alliance-based network often results in a highly matrixed organization that focuses on both capabilities and line responsibilities. Although tension is often thought of as undesirable, it has been discovered that debate and discussion unleash creativity in an organization. Issues, and hence opportunities, surface much more quickly. The key is to avoid deadlocks in debates where creativity is stifled and progress is not made.</p>
<p>2. Educate all employees. Company-wide education is essential before any change program is rolled out, if a company&#8217;s capabilities are to be kept running smoothly throughout the turmoil that such a program inevitably brings about. Most people innately prefer the status quo unless and until they are given some sound reason why an alternative is preferable.</p>
<p>3. Use the new orientation to bring managers closer to customers. Frontline personnel are often quicker to adapt, and less resistant to the idea of a new way of thinking than are a company&#8217;s managers. Companies can speed up a sluggish start to their transition by nominating a few potential champions at the top of the organization and at successive levels further down. The designated champions can then be sent out to experience firsthand some of the problems that face the organization&#8217;s customers. This results in bottom-up leadership from those closest to the customers.</p>
<p>4. Buy expertise that you do not already have in-house. In many cases a new idea &#8211; and the proposed route of the journey &#8211; is so strange that organizations do not have the in-house skills that are needed to make the transition. They need to go out and find help in those areas where they have insufficient expertise &#8211; for example, with the techniques of change management. Most importantly, outside help can help you surface and challenge assumptions that may be invisible to the rest of the organization.</p>
<p>5. Communicate clearly, continuously and repeatedly. It is not possible to exaggerate the need for transitional information to be clearly and regularly communicated throughout the organization. If in doubt, remember the Rule of 50s. The first 50 times you tell people something, they don&#8217;t hear you. The second 50 times you tell them the same thing, they don&#8217;t believe you. Only during the third 50 times that you tell them do they begin to listen.</p>
<p>6. Build safeguards that prevent backward steps. Senior managers who are not close to their customers can stall a transition that is already well under way and may even cause it to revert back. This can sometimes occur because of an unexpected change of leadership. To minimize the risk from such a changeover, companies should develop several strong leaders on the team so that there is someone to carry on the role of champion if (and when) one of the others moves on.</p>
<p>Additionally, employing a phased approach can help prevent setbacks. Taking on too much change at one time can be a shock to the organization and can lead to a sort of traumatic inertia.</p>
<p>7. Realize that one size does not fit all. Organizations should not try to follow any one case study too literally. No two companies will pass through a transition for the same reasons or by following the same sequence of events. Not only does one size not fit all; one size doesn&#8217;t even fit two.</p>
<p>Any leader worth his or her salt should be enthusiastic about creating a culture of innovation. After all, a company with such a culture naturally rises to the top. Once innovation becomes a way of life for your company, people will want to work for you. You will begin to attract the best and the brightest. And before you know it, your company will be a leader &#8211; not a follower &#8211; in the marketplace.</p>
